About YC Chocolate
YC Chocolate began life when Diane Yamate began manufacturing high quality sugar-based chocolates in 1979 in Northern California. Diane's chocolates became popular within the local market, which resulted in increased sales. In 1990, after over a decade of selling her chocolates locally, Diane took a big step and purchased a building and began wholesaling her chocolates to small retailers outside of Northern California. Business continued to increase, particularly with higher sales volume of molded chocolate gift chocolates.
Between 1995 and 1997, several major changes occurred. John Cunnell, an experienced chocolatier joined with Diane Yamate in the creation of a new company named Yamate Chocolatier. The California facility was closed and consolidated into the current New Jersey chocolate factory. This allowed for more cost efficient manufacturing and concentrated efforts in one location with better shipping availability.
Due to the increasing requests of retailers for a “good tasting” sugar free equivalent to our high quality sugar line, the focus of our development efforts turned to sugar free. The growing demand for this style of sugar free chocolate was expressed by not only the diabetic community, but also by the health conscience generation of baby boomers that were changing their eating habits to match their improved life-styles.
In 1997, Yamate Chocolatier introduced a line of finely decorated and truly delicious sugar free chocolates at the New York Fancy Food Show. Sales of the sugar free soon outgrew the sugar-based line and Yamate made a commitment to become a totally sugar free company.
Intensifying our commitment in 1998 to a “healthy indulgence”, we eliminated all artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, preservatives and lactose. To ensure continuance of the high flavor standards established, we created our own chocolate for use exclusively in our products. The line was expanded with a gift box line and we were the first manufacturer allowed to sell our sugar free chocolates to national retailers in the natural products market. Yamate was the first domestic company to manufacture an all-natural, sugar-free chocolate line.
The Yamate sugar free line won “Best of Aisle” awards at the New York Fancy Food Show for two years in a row, 1999 & 2000 and also one of the “Hottest new products” by NASFT’s (National Association for the Specialty Food Trade) Magazine, Christmas 2000.
As our company grew in popularity, and our distinctive Japanese calligraphy styled logo became more well known, more and more customers began referring to our company as "YC Chocolate". So, in 2004 we also joined with our customers in naming our product "YC Chocolate".
Since those early days, YC Chocolate has experienced tremendous growth and is expanding its brand across the Pacific into Asia. Along with its continuing growth, YC Chocolate is committed to doing business in a way that benefits customers, employees, and the global community.
